Welttheater Einsiedeln

June 13 – September 7, 2024 (not daily!)

The Welttheater Einsiedeln  is an absolutely amazing experience. The open-air theater takes place at irregular intervals of around 10 years against the picturesque backdrop of the Swiss Alps and Einsiedeln Abbey.

Now in its 17th year, hundreds of local amateur actors present a play with biblical, historical, and contemporary themes. The original – “El gran teatro del mundo” – was written by the Spanish baroque writer, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, who brought the spiritual play about life and death to the stage for the first time in 1655. Since 2000, the open-air performances in Einsiedeln have been staged in contemporary adaptations. Swiss author Lukas Bärfuss is responsible for realizing the play in 2024.

Young and old, long-term residents, schoolchildren, people with disabilities, and entire families give up their summer vacation to be on the stage together. This community of local actors, coupled with the wonderful stage on Klosterplatz, the rousing music, and the performances of all those involved, is a rare spectacle that is well worth a visit.

Play begins: 8.45 pm
Duration: 105 minutes
